 I’m not a big fan of smart speakers and I don’t think they look good or sound amazing,  but the new Echo Dot Smart Speaker is an upgrade from last year’s version and for me it looks like the perfect gadget to bring into my house if you have a smart speaker system that isn’t in your own home. So if you’re looking to add a few extra gadgets into your smart speaker setup you can now get your hands on one of last year’s best-looking phones. But the question remains, how do we make them work with our current set up?

 I thought about writing some tutorials for people who already have their Amazon Alexa setup in place, then transferring some of those instructions to the new device,   so here’s what I found out. Now let’s get onto some real smart speaker basics!

 What does this new device do really well?

 The newest model takes full advantage of the natural sounds you make when using your voice to get things done. Whether you’re talking or just trying to talk to Alexa or play music, you can hear every word of what you’re saying using a microphone built right into the back of the Echo! It even supports three different modes of listening —      Hey, What’s That (or any other Alexa command), Hey Alexa, Do You Want Some          Coffee, and finally Just Saying “Okay”. This means the audio quality of your voice will change depending on the situation. Using two very different modes let you listen to music, tell Alexa something or ask her questions. You’ll obviously want to learn how to control everything that goes on inside the device first, so I’ll try and explain everything as basic as possible. But I think most people should be able to just go around to find a simple toggle under the menu to just click the Start button and play whatever they need to listen to.  Nowadays, we tend to interact with devices by using only our voices. However, in reality you can see a lot of smart home devices such as light bulbs, thermostats and lights in the room like someone is actually moving the device around. We don’t need our finger or other physical movement to move it. However, I think people may like to feel that there are more ways to communicate with a device like an Amazon Echo.

 Is this a true home theater system?

 Yes, it uses its unique design to create a stereo experience. You may wonder why the   Echo doesn’t use Dolby Audio, since it was already doing it well (or at least should be). Well, it has been created by Sony and Sony is giving the company $100 million to develop better audio technology. Maybe someday we’ll see all these little tiny microphones working together. And maybe one day when we take the whole TV in the living room all the way down to each speaker, all the way up to the bottom floor of the screen the ones closest to the ground will be used for the actual TV sound. In conclusion, I think it’s nice to have an all-in-one smart speaker setup, and I have a   bunch of them so they are easy to switch between if I ever don’t like a particular sound. No worries though, because I’ve spent over $600 for an Apple TV 4K, which only works with a small fraction of the available channels. So while I love having many devices connected to the same screen, for my family it would be nice to have just one or two speakers so we can watch movie clips, and talk at once without worrying.
